Luke Wright was once one of the toughest cops in New York, but then he turned in his dirty colleagues, and since then his life has gone downhill. He began participating in underground fights without rules and once won a fight in which serious people from the Russian mafia bet on his defeat, who killed his wife as punishment. Now Luke is an ordinary homeless man, and he is already preparing to take his own life when he sees a little Chinese girl being chased by Russian and Chinese mobsters. He decides to stand up for her, thereby getting into a very dangerous story.
Jason Statham has fallen into the trap that many action stars have fallen into before him. When he tries to go beyond his role, critics pointedly "put him in his place," and when he stars in another jaw–dropping action movie, these same people sigh wearily, like, well, here's another action movie with Statham, and they're all so similar, blah blah blah. The audience is not so categorical and picky, but the collections of films with his participation show that even they are beginning to lose patience – "Adrenaline 2", "Mechanic" and "Professional" did not pay off at the box office, and Statham's latest real hit (not counting "The Expendables", in which he was only part of a large ensemble) "this is Carrier 3. Of course, all these films get their way on video – after all, in fact, this is the most natural "B" movie, albeit very high-quality – but it can't go on like this forever. Alas, The Defender is unlikely to reverse this downward trend, but that doesn't mean the film is bad. On the contrary, it is noticeably better than the same "Mechanics", "Adrenaline 2" and "Carrier 3", but it also bears the indelible stamp of "badness". Which has never bothered connoisseurs of such paintings, but scares off a wider audience.
In spirit, this is a cross between Kurosawa's "Bodyguard" (or rather, one of his remakes, Walter Hill's "Lone Hero"), "Kings of the Streets" and any other action film starring Statham - and Yakin's cross turned out to be very confident and quite verified. Standing up for the little Chinese woman (she is amazingly quick to memorize numbers, and in her head is stored the code to the safes in which organized crime hides its dirty money), Wright immediately finds himself between three fires – the Chinese triad, the Russian mafia and the corrupt authorities represented by his former police buddies, so he will have to sweat. Breaking bones, pounding forks into throats and shooting accurately to kill. The plot develops very quickly (even if Yakin doesn't particularly bother with motivation and drama), the action was shot with a shaking camera, but so that all the movements were more or less visible, Statham is such a classic, good Statham.
